أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَكَانَتْ مُلُوكٌ بَعْدَ عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ بَدَّلُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ وَكَانَ فِيهِمْ مُؤْمِنُونَ يَقْرَءُونَ التَّوْرَاةَ قِيلَ لِمُلُوكِهِمْ مَا نَجِدُ شَتْمًا أَشَدَّ مِنْ شَتْمٍ يَشْتِمُونَّا هَؤُلَاءِ إِنَّهُمْ يَقْرَءُونَ{ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَحْكُمْ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمْ الْكَافِرُونَ }وَهَؤُلَاءِ الْآيَاتِ مَعَ مَا يَعِيبُونَّا بِهِ فِي أَعْمَالِنَا فِي قِرَاءَتِهِمْ فَادْعُهُمْ فَلْيَقْرَءُوا كَمَا نَقْرَأُ وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا كَمَا آمَنَّا فَدَعَاهُمْ فَجَمَعَهُمْ وَعَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ الْقَتْلَ أَوْ يَتْرُكُوا قِرَاءَةَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ إِلَّا مَا بَدَّلُوا مِنْهَا فَقَالُوا مَا تُرِيدُونَ إِلَى ذَلِكَ دَعُونَا فَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ ابْنُوا لَنَا أُسْطُوَانَةً ثُمَّ ارْفَعُونَا إِلَيْهَا ثُمَّ اعْطُونَا شَيْئًا نَرْفَعُ بِهِ طَعَامَنَا وَشَرَابَنَا فَلَا نَرِدُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ دَعُونَا نَسِيحُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَنَهِيمُ وَنَشْرَبُ كَمَا يَشْرَبُ الْوَحْشُ فَإِنْ قَدَرْتُمْ عَلَيْنَا فِي أَرْضِكُمْ فَاقْتُلُونَا وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ ابْنُوا لَنَا دُورًا فِي الْفَيَافِي وَنَحْتَفِرُ الْآبَارَ وَنَحْتَرِثُ الْبُقُولَ فَلَا نَرِدُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا نَمُرُّ بِكُمْ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ الْقَبَائِلِ إِلَّا وَلَهُ حَمِيمٌ فِيهِمْ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ{ وَرَهْبَانِيَّةً ابْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهَا }وَالْآخَرُونَ قَالُوا نَتَعَبَّدُ كَمَا تَعَبَّدَ فُلَانٌ وَنَسِيحُ كَمَا سَاحَ فُلَانٌ وَنَتَّخِذُ دُورًا كَمَا اتَّخَذَ فُلَانٌ وَهُمْ عَلَى شِرْكِهِمْ لَا عِلْمَ لَهُمْ بِإِيمَانِ الَّذِينَ اقْتَدَوْا بِهِ فَلَمَّا بَعَثَ اللَّهُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ انْحَطَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ صَوْمَعَتِهِ وَجَاءَ سَائِحٌ مِنْ سِيَاحَتِهِ وَصَاحِبُ الدَّيْرِ مِنْ دَيْرِهِ فَآمَنُوا بِهِ وَصَدَّقُوهُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى{ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَآمِنُوا بِرَسُولِهِ يُؤْتِكُمْ كِفْلَيْنِ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ }أَجْرَيْنِ بِإِيمَانِهِمْ بِعِيسَى وَبِالتَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَبِإِيمَانِهِمْ بِمُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَصْدِيقِهِمْ قَالَ يَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ نُورًا تَمْشُونَ بِهِ الْقُرْآنَ وَاتِّبَاعَهُمْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ{ لِئَلَّا يَعْلَمَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ }يَتَشَبَّهُونَ بِكُمْ{ أَنْ لَا يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ }الْآيَةَ

Narrated to us [Al Husain bin Huraits] he said : Narrated to us [Al Fadl bin Musa] from [Sufyan bin Sa'id] from ['Atha` bin As Sa`ib] from [Sa'id bin Jubair] from [Ibn Abbas] he said : "The kings after Prophet Isa bin Maryam 'Alaihi Ash Shalatu was Salam changed the Torah and the Gospel, even though among them there were people who read the Torah. Then it was said to those kings: "We do not get bad reproaches from their reproaches. They read: 'Whoever does not decide according to what Allah has revealed, then they are disbelievers'. They read these verses to criticize our deeds, so invite them to read as we read, and believe as we believe." The kings then invited those who read the Torah (the believers), then gathered them and offered them; (chose to) be killed or they abandoned their reading of the Torah and Gospel, unless they were willing to read the Torah and Gospel as they had changed the reading. The believers said : "What do you want with that offer? Leave us alone." Then a group of them said: "Build us a tower, then raise us to it, give us a tool with which we can raise our food and drink so that we do not pass (disturb) you." Some of them also said: "Let us scatter on the earth until we are thirsty and drink as animals drink, if you find us in your territory, then kill us." Others said: "Build us a house (monastery) in the Sahara desert, then we will dig wells and plant vegetables, we will not cross or meet you again." And there was not a single tribe unless boiling water had been prepared by the kings. Ibn Abbas said : "When they did that, Allah 'azza wajalla revealed the verse: 'And they invented the rahbaniyyah even though we did not require it from them but (they themselves invented it) to seek Allah's pleasure, then they did not maintain it with proper care'. While others said : "We will worship as Fulan worships. We will adventure as Fulan adventures. We will build a house as Fulan builds a house." They remained in polytheism, and they had no knowledge of the faith of the people they used as role models. When Allah sent the Prophet peace be upon him, they (the believers) were left with nothing but a few. A man will come down from his place of worship, adventurers will come from their place of adventure, the owner of the house (monastery) will come out of his house, then they will believe and confirm his prophethood (Muhammad). Allah Tabaraka Wa Ta'ala then said: 'O you who believe (in the apostles), fear Allah and believe in His Messenger, Allah will surely give you His mercy in two parts'. The two parts (of goodness) are their belief in Jesus, the Torah and the Gospel, and their belief in Muhammad peace be upon him and their justification for him. Ibn Abbas continued; "Allah made light for them, with which they can practice the Koran and follow the sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him." "Then Allah said: 'We explain such things) so that the people of the Book may know', they are like you '(that they will not get anything at all)'."
