"It was narrated to us by [Abu Nu'aim Al Fadl bin Dukain] who said: It was narrated to us by [Shayban] from [Yahya] from [Abu Salamah] from [Abu Hurairah] that the Khuza'ah killed a man from Banu Laith during the conquest of Makkah in retaliation for one of their own who was killed. This was reported to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who mounted his camel and delivered a sermon: 'Indeed, Allah has withheld killing from Makkah, or the elephant.' Abu Abdullah said: 'Thus Abu Nu'aim mentioned it, and they were uncertain between "killing" and "elephant," while others say "elephant." And Allah granted victory to His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and the believers over them. He said: "Know that it was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me. Know that it was lawful for me for a moment of the day. Know that at this hour it is sacred; its thorns may not be cut, its trees may not be felled, and its lost items may not be picked up except by one who announces them. Whoever is killed has the better of two options: either compensation or retaliation from the victim's family." Then a man from Yemen came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, write it for me." He said: "Write for Abu so-and-so." A man from Quraysh said: "Except for Idhkhir, O Messenger of Allah, for we use it in our houses and graves." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Except Idhkhir, except Idhkhir." It was Sa'dto Abu Abdullah: "What was written for him?" He replied: "That sermon."'
