Narrated to us [Abdullah bin Maslamah], he said: narrated to us [Abdul Aziz]—meaning Abdul Aziz bin Muhammad—from [Amru bin Abu Amru] from [Ikrimah], that some people from Iraq said: 'O [Ibnu Abbas], what is your opinion about this verse we have been commanded to act upon its contents, but no one does so? That is the saying of Allah: O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not reached puberty among you ask permission of you three times: before the dawn prayer, when you put aside your clothing at noon, and after the Isha prayer. These are three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these…" Al-Qa'The Prophet recited it up to His saying: "…All-Knowing, All-Wise" [An-Nur: 58]. Ibnu Abbas said: "Indeed, Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness toward the believers. Allah loves the covering of others’ faults. At that time, people had no curtains or veils in their houses, so a servant, a child, or an orphan girl might enter while a man was with his wife. So Allah commanded them to seek permission at those times. Allah brought them the law of hijab and goodness, but I have never found anyone doing that." Abu Dawud said: "The hadiths of Ubaidullah and Atha weaken this hadith."'"'
