Narrated to us by [Abu Mush'ab Al Madani] by qira`ah, from [Malik bin Anas] from [Ibn Syihab] from ['Urwah] and [Amrah] from ['Aisyah] said; 'When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was in i'tikaf he would often put his head into my room, then I would comb his hair. He never entered the house except for relieving himself.' Abu 'Isa said; 'This is a hasan sahih hadith. Thus many narrated this hadith from [Malik] from [Ibn Syihab] from ['Urwah] and [Amrah] from ['Aisyah]. Some narrated it from [Malik] from [Ibn Syihab] from ['Urwah] from [Amrah] from ['Aisyah], but the most sahih is from 'Urwah and Amrah from 'Aisyah. Narrated to us with that hadith [Qutaibah] narrated to us [Al Laits bin Sa'ad] from [Ibn Syihab] from ['Urwah] and [Amrah] from ['Aisyah]. Scholars practice this hadith, that a person in i'tikaf should not leave the place of i'tikaf except for relieving needs. They agree on this, that exiting to fulfill relieving and urinating. Then they differ; is it permissible to visit the sick, attend Friday prayer, and escort a funeral for one in i'tikaf? Some scholars from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and others opine; permitting visiting the sick, attending funeral, going to Friday prayer, if he stipulates it. This is the opinion of Sufyan Ats Tsauri and Ibn Al Mubarak. Some other scholars opine, a person in i'tikaf may not do all that. If he stays in a city, he should perform i'tikaf in the congregational mosque. They dislike if he must leave his i'tikaf place for Friday prayer. While they opine he should not miss Friday prayer. They say; 'He should not perform i'tikaf except in the congregational mosque, so he does not need to leave his i'tikaf place except for relieving needs. Because his exit from i'tikaf place for other needs, according to them invalidates i'tikaf. This is the opinion of Malik and Syafi'i.' Imam Ahmad said; '(A person in i'tikaf) may not visit the sick nor escort funeral based on the hadith of 'Aisyah.' Ishaq said; 'If he stipulates beforehand, then he may visit the sick and escort funeral.'
