Narrated to us [Abul Walid Ath Thayalisi], he said: narrated to us [Syu'bah] from [Al A'masy] from [Abu Shalih] from [Abu Hurairah], he said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If your mouths were filled with vomit, it would be better than being filled with poetry." Abu Ali said: "It has reached me from Abu Ubaid, who said: 'The meaning is that the heart should be filled and occupied with the recitation of the Qur'an and remembrance of Allah. For, in our view, if the heart is filled with the Qur'an and knowledge, the throat will not be filled with poetry. And indeed, in eloquence, there is magic.' He said: 'It is as if excessive explanation means praising people and convincing them until their hearts turn to his words, or censuring others and convincing them so that their hearts incline to his words, as if he enchants the listeners with his eloquence.'"'"
