Imam Tirmidzi : 26حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَجَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ يَسَافٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ فَانْتَثِرْ وَإِذَا اسْتَجْمَرْتَ فَأَوْتِرْقَالَ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ عُثْمَانَ وَلَقِيطِ بْنِ صَبِرَةَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَالْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ وَوَائِلِ بْنِ حُجْرٍ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ وَاخْتَلَفَ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ فِيمَنْ تَرَكَ الْمَضْمَضَةَ وَالِاسْتِنْشَاقَ فَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ إِذَا تَرَكَهُمَا فِي الْوُضُوءِ حَتَّى صَلَّى أَعَادَ الصَّلَاةَ وَرَأَوْا ذَلِكَ فِي الْوُضُوءِ وَالْجَنَابَةِ سَوَاءً وَبِهِ يَقُولُ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ وَأَحْمَدُ وَإِسْحَقُ و قَالَ أَحْمَدُ الِاسْتِنْشَاقُ أَوْكَدُ مِنْ الْمَضْمَضَةِ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ يُعِيدُ فِي الْجَنَابَةِ وَلَا يُعِيدُ فِي الْوُضُوءِ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ وَبَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ لَا يُعِيدُ فِي الْوُضُوءِ وَلَا فِي الْجَنَابَةِ لِأَنَّهُمَا سُنَّةٌ مِنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَا تَجِبُ الْإِعَادَةُ عَلَى مَنْ تَرَكَهُمَا فِي الْوُضُوءِ وَلَا فِي الْجَنَابَةِ وَهُوَ قَوْلُ مَالِكٍ وَالشَّافِعِيِّ فِي آخِرَةٍ
Narrated to us [Qutaibah bin Sa‘id], he said: narrated to us [Hammad bin Zayd] and [Jarir] from [Mansur] from [Hilal bin Yasaf] from [Salamah bin Qays]: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace be upon him, said: "When you perform wudu, sniff water into your nose: and when you perform istijmar, use an odd number." In this chapter there are also narrations from ‘Uthman, Laqit bin Sabirah, Ibn ‘Abbas, Al-Miqdam bin Ma‘dikarib, Wa’il bin Hujr and Abu Hurairah. Abu Isa said: "The hadith of Salamah bin Qays is hasan sahih. Scholars differ regarding one who omits rinsing the mouth and sniffing water. One group says: ‘If he omits them and prays, he must repeat the prayer.’ They hold this for both wudu and ghusl from janabah: among them are Ibn Abi Layla, ‘Abdullah Ibn Al-Mubarak, Ahmad and Ishaq. Ahmad stressed sniffing more in wudu. Abu Isa said: ‘Another group holds it obligatory only in ghusl from janabah, not wudu’—the view of Sufyan Ath-Thawri and some Kufans. Yet another group says it is neither obligatory in wudu nor ghusl, being sunnah: omitting them requires no repetition—the view of Malik and Ash-Shafi‘i’s new opinion."
