Narrated to us [Abu Bakar bin Abu Syaibah], narrated to us ['Affan], narrated to us [Hammad bin Salamah] from [Tsabit] from [Anas], that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, held a consultation when news reached him about the arrival of Abu Sufyan’s caravan. Anas said, 'Then Abu Bakr spoke, but he paid no heed to him. Then Umar spoke, and he paid no heed to him either. Then Sa'd bin Ubadah stood up and said, 'Is it us you seek, O Messenger of Allah? By Allah, in Whose hand is my soul, if you order us to cross the sea, we will cross it, and if you order us to go to the ends of the earth, we will go.' Anas continued, 'Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called the people to gather, and they set out until they reached Badr. There, they met water carriers for the Quraysh. Among them was a black slave belonging to Banu Hajjaj, and they captured him. Then the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, interrogated him about Abu Sufyan and his army. He replied, 'I don’t know about Abu Sufyan, but I know Abu Jahal, 'Utbah, Syaibah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf are with a group of people (soldiers).' Every time he said something similar, they beat him until he said, 'Yes, I’ll tell you, Abu Sufyan is there too.' Then they left the slave alone. Shortly after, they asked about Abu Sufyan again, and he replied, 'I don’t know where Abu Sufyan is, but there are Abu Jahal, 'Utbah, Syaibah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf with a group of people (soldiers).' Every time he answered like that, they beat the slave.' At that time, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was standing in prayer. When he finished praying and saw the incident, he said, 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, why do you beat him when he tells the truth and leave him when he lies?' Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, 'There is the place where so-and-so will be killed,' pointing to the ground, 'here, and here.' Anas said, 'And none of the places he pointed to were far from where those he indicated with his hand were killed.'
