و حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَرْحٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَتَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ حِمْيَرَ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْعَدُوِّ فَأَرَادَ سَلَبَهُ فَمَنَعَهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ وَكَانَ وَالِيًا عَلَيْهِمْ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ لِخَالِدٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُعْطِيَهُ سَلَبَهُ قَالَ اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ادْفَعْهُ إِلَيْهِ فَمَرَّ خَالِدٌ بِعَوْفٍ فَجَرَّ بِرِدَائِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَلْ أَنْجَزْتُ لَكَ مَا ذَكَرْتُ لَكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَمِعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاسْتُغْضِبَ فَقَالَ لَا تُعْطِهِ يَا خَالِدُ لَا تُعْطِهِ يَا خَالِدُ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ تَارِكُونَ لِي أُمَرَائِي إِنَّمَا مَثَلُكُمْ وَمَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ اسْتُرْعِيَ إِبِلًا أَوْ غَنَمًا فَرَعَاهَا ثُمَّ تَحَيَّنَ سَقْيَهَا فَأَوْرَدَهَا حَوْضًا فَشَرَعَتْ فِيهِ فَشَرِبَتْ صَفْوَهُ وَتَرَكَتْ كَدْرَهُ فَصَفْوُهُ لَكُمْ وَكَدْرُهُ عَلَيْهِمْ و حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ مَنْ خَرَجَ مَعَ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ فِي غَزْوَةِ مُؤْتَةَ وَرَافَقَنِي مَدَدِيٌّ مِنْ الْيَمَنِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَحْوِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا خَالِدُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَضَى بِالسَّلَبِ لِلْقَاتِلِ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ

Narrated to me [Abu At Thahir Ahmad bin 'Amru bin Sarh], informed us [Abdullah bin Wahb], informed me [Mu'awiyah bin Shalih] from [Abdurrahman bin Jubair] from [his father] from ['Auf bin Malik], he said: 'A man from Himyar killed an enemy and wanted to take his spoils, but Khalid bin Walid, his commander, prevented him. 'Auf bin Malik reported to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who said: "Why didn’t you give him his spoils?" Khalid replied: "I gave him plenty, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Give him his share!" Once, Khalid passed by 'Auf, who pulled his cloak hard and said: "Didn’t you hear what I conveyed from the Messenger’s ruling?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard 'Auf’s words, got angry, and said: "O Khalid, do not give it to him, do not give it to him!" Then he said to 'Auf: "Why not leave the commanders I appoint to me? Your example and theirs is like a shepherd of camels or goats who brings them to a pond. The animals drink the clean water, leaving the dirty water. The clean water is for you, and the dirty water is for them." Narrated to me [Zuhair bin Harb], narrated to us [Al Walid bin Muslim], narrated to us [Shafwan bin 'Amru] from [Abdurrahman bin Jubair bin Nufair] from [his father] from ['Auf bin Malik Al Asyja'i], he said: 'I went out with Zaid bin Haritsah in the Battle of Mu'tah, and a group of Yemeni soldiers came to assist me…' then he continued the hadith as above, but it mentioned: "['Auf] said: 'O [Khalid], don’t you know the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ruled that whoever kills an enemy gets his spoils?' Khalid replied: 'Yes, but I gave him plenty.'
