It was narrated to us by ['Abdullah bin Yusuf] who said: It was narrated to me by [Al-Layth] who said: It was narrated to me by [Sa'id], who is the son of Abu Sa'id, from [Abu Shuraih] that he Sa'dto 'Amr bin Sa'id while he was sending expeditions to Makkah: 'O Amir, permit me to convey a statement that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered the day after the conquest, which my ears heard, my heart comprehended, and my eyes saw when he spoke it. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then said: "Indeed, Makkah has been made sacred by Allah, not by people. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it or to cut down its trees. If anyone seeks permission citing the fighting of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in it, say: 'Indeed, Allah permitted His Messenger, but He did not permit you.' Indeed, it was permitted for me only for a brief moment of the day, then its sanctity was restored today as it was yesterday. Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent.' It was Sa'dto Abu Shuraih: 'What did 'Amr say?' He said: 'I know better than you, O Abu Shuraih: It does not shelter the disobedient, the one who sheds blood, or the thief.'
