Narrated to us [Ibrahim bin Hamzah], narrated to us [Ibrahim bin Sa'ad] from [Shalih bin Kaisan] from [Ibnu Syihab] from ['Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah] from ['Abdullah bin 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them], that he informed him that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote to Caesar, inviting him to Islam. He sent his letter with Dihyah Al Kalbiy, ordering him to give it to the governor of Busra, who would pass it to Caesar. When Allah granted Caesar victory over the Persian forces, he walked from Hims to Iliya' in gratitude for Allah's favor. When the Prophet's letter reached Caesar, he Sa'dafter reading it: 'Find me someone from his people so I can ask about the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.' [Ibnu 'Abbas] said: Abu Sufyan bin Harb told me that he was in Sham with some Quraysh men trading during the truce between the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the disbelievers of Quraysh. Abu Sufyan said: 'Caesar's envoy found us in Sham and took me and my companions to Iliya'. We were brought to him, and he was seated in his royal court, wearing a crown, surrounded by Roman nobles. He Sa'dto his interpreter: 'Ask them who among them is closest in kinship to this man who claims to be a prophet.' I said: 'I am the closest to him in kinship.' He asked: 'What is your relation to him?' I said: 'He is my cousin.' There was no one else from Bani 'Abdu Manaf in the group that day. Caesar said: 'Bring him closer.' He ordered my companions to stand behind me, near my shoulders. Then he Sa'dto his interpreter: 'Tell his companions I will ask this man about the one who claims to be a prophet. If he lies, let them contradict him.' Abu Sufyan said: 'By Allah, if not for the shame that my companions would attribute a lie to me, I would have lied about him. But I was ashamed to be known as a liar, so I told the truth.' Then he Sa'dto his interpreter: 'Ask him, how is this man's lineage among you?' I said: 'He has a noble lineage among us.' He asked: 'Did anyone among you say this before him?' I said: 'No.' He asked: 'Did you accuse him of lying before he Sa'dwhat he said?' I said: 'No.' He asked: 'Was there a king among his ancestors?' I said: 'No.' He asked: 'Do the nobles or the weak among the people follow him?' I said: 'Rather, the weak among them.' He asked: 'Are they increasing or decreasing?' I said: 'They are increasing.' He asked: 'Does anyone apostatize, dissatisfied with his religion, after entering it?' I said: 'No.' He asked: 'Does he break his promises?' I said: 'No, but we are in a truce with him now, and we fear he might betray us.' Abu Sufyan said: 'He gave me no chance to say anything to belittle him without fear of being quoted.' He asked: 'Have you fought him or has he fought you?' I said: 'Yes.' He asked: 'How was your war with him?' I said: 'It was back and forth; sometimes he defeats us, and sometimes we defeat him.' He asked: 'What does he command you to do?' I said: 'He commands us to worship Allah alone, not associating anything with Him, and forbids us from worshipping what our ancestors worshipped. He orders us to pray, give charity, be chaste, keep promises, and fulfill trusts.' He Sa'dto his interpreter when I Sa'dthis: 'Tell him, I asked about his lineage, and you Sa'dhe has a noble lineage. So it is with messengers, sent among their people's noble lineage. I asked if anyone among you Sa'dthis before, and you Sa'dno. I thought if someone had Sa'dit before, he might be following someone else's words. I asked if you accused him of lying before he spoke, and you Sa'dno. I knew he would not avoid lying to people and then lie about Allah. I asked if any of his ancestors were kings, and you Sa'dno. I thought if there was a king among them, he might be seeking his ancestors' kingdom. I asked if the nobles or the weak follow him, and you Sa'dthe weak. They are the followers of messengers. I asked if they increase or decrease, and you Sa'dthey increase. So it is with faith until it is complete. I asked if anyone apostatizes, dissatisfied with his religion, and you Sa'dno. So it is with faith when its joy enters the heart; no one dislikes it. I asked if he breaks promises, and you Sa'dno. So it is with messengers; they do not betray. I asked if you fought him, and you Sa'dyou did, and your wars are back and forth. So it is with messengers; they are tested, but victory is theirs in the end. I asked what he commands you, and you Sa'dhe commands you to worship Allah alone, not associating anything with Him, forbids you from worshipping your ancestors' idols, and orders you to pray, give charity, be chaste, keep promises, and fulfill trusts. These are the qualities of a prophet. I knew one would appear, but I did not think he would be from among you. If what you say is true, he will soon rule the land beneath my feet. If I could reach him, I would strive to meet him, and if I were with him, I would wash his feet.' Abu Sufyan said: 'Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and it was read. It said: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the great leader of the Romans. Peace be upon those who follow guidance. I invite you to the call of Islam. Embrace Islam, and you will be safe. Embrace Islam, and Allah will grant you your reward twice. But if you turn away, you will bear the sin of the Arisiyyin (Europeans). And: "O People of the Book, come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as lords besides Allah. But if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are Muslims" [Qur'an, Alu 'Imran: 63].' Abu Sufyan said: 'When he finished his speech, the voices of the Roman nobles around him rose, and their clamor increased, but I did not understand what they said. We were ordered to leave. When I left with my companions and was alone with them, I Sa'dto them: 'The matter of Ibn Abi Kabshah has become great; even the king of the yellow-skinned people (Romans) fears him.' Abu Sufyan said: 'By Allah, I remained humiliated, certain that his cause would prevail, until Allah opened my heart to Islam, though I was reluctant.'
