حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرِيبٍ عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَهُ الْعَصَا وَفِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَقْنَاءٌ مُعَلَّقَةٌ فِيهَا قِنْوٌ فِيهِ حَشَفٌ فَغَمَزَ الْقِنْوَ بِالْعَصَا الَّتِي فِي يَدِهِ قَالَ لَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةِ تَصَدَّقَ بِأَطْيَبَ مِنْهَا إِنَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةِ لَيَأْكُلُ الْحَشَفَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ لَتَدَعُنَّهَا أَرْبَعِينَ عَامًا لِلْعَوَافِي قَالَ فَقُلْتُ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ يَعْنِي الطَّيْرَ وَالسِّبَاعَ قَالَ وَكُنَّا نَقُولُ إِنَّ هَذَا لَلَّذِي تُسَمِّيهِ الْعَجَمُ هِيَ الْكَرَاكِيُّ

Narrated to us [Abu Bakar Al Hanafi] Narrated to us [Abdul Hamid bin Ja'far] from [Salih bin Abu 'Arib] from [Katsir bin Murrah Al Hadlrami] from ['Auf bin Malik Al Asyja'i] said: Rasulullah Peace be upon him wa sallam came out to us, he was carrying a stick and in the mosque there were bunches of dates hanging which had stems containing broken dates, he pointed bunch of dates with a stick in his hand, he said: "If the owner of this alms wishes he would definitely give alms to someone better than him, in fact the owner of this alms will really eat damaged dates on the Day of Resurrection." Saying 'Auf: Then the Messenger of Allah Peace be upon him wa sallam turned to us and said: "Remember, by Allah, O people of Medina, you will leave it for forty years for 'awafi." I said: Allahu a'lam, he meant birds and wild animals. Saying 'Auf: We used to say: This is what the ajam call karari.
