Narrated to us [Qutaibah], narrated to us ['Abdul 'Aziz bin Muhammad] from [Ja'far bin Muhammad] from [his father] from [Jabir bin Abdullah] that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to Makkah in the year of the conquest of Makkah while fasting with his companions, when arriving at Kuraa'ul Ghamim it was said to him, Indeed the people are burdened because of fasting and they see what you will do, then he asked for a bag of water after Asr then drank it witnessed by all the companions, so some of them broke the fast and some others chose to continue fasting, it turned out that the news of the people who continued fasting reached him, then he said: "They are the disobedient people." And in this chapter (there is also narration -pent) from Ka'ab bin 'Ashim, Ibnu Abbas and Abu Hurairah. The hadith of Jabir is a hasan sahih hadith. And it has been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "Fasting while traveling is not part of goodness." Therefore the scholars differ on fasting during travel, some scholars from the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, hold that breaking during travel is better, even they hold that qadla' is obligatory if he fasts during travel, among those who choose this opinion are Ahmad and Ishaq. While some scholars from the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and others hold if he feels strong then fasts then that is better, but if he chooses to break then it is permissible. This opinion is also chosen by Sufyan Ats Tsauri, Malik bin Anas and Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak. Syafi'i said, the meaning of the above hadith of the Prophet is if his heart does not accept the concession from Allah ta'ala, as for the person who holds the permissibility of breaking during travel but he feels strong then fasts then that is what I prefer.
