"Musa said: Narrated to me by Salim bin 'Abdullah, and I only know it as narrated from Ibn 'Umar, that Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail went to Sham seeking a religion to follow. He met a Jewish scholar and asked about their religion, saying, 'Perhaps I will follow your religion, so tell me about it.' The scholar said, 'You cannot follow our religion unless you take your share of Allah’s wrath.' Zaid said, 'I only flee from Allah’s wrath, and I will never bear any of Allah’s wrath as long as I can. Can you guide me to another religion?' He said, 'I only know of the Hanif religion.' Zaid asked, 'What is the Hanif?' He said, 'The religion of Ibrahim, who was neither a Jew nor a Christian and worshipped only Allah.' Zaid left and met a Christian scholar, repeating the same. The scholar said, 'You cannot follow our religion unless you take your share of Allah’s curse.' Zaid said, 'I only flee from Allah’s curse and wrath, and I will never bear any of it as long as I can. Can you guide me to another religion?' He said, 'I only know of the Hanif religion.' Zaid asked, 'What is the Hanif?' He said, 'The religion of Ibrahim, who was neither a Jew nor a Christian and worshipped only Allah.' When Zaid heard their statements about Ibrahim peace be upon him, he left, raised his hands, and said, 'O Allah, I bear witness that I am upon the religion of Ibrahim.' Al-Laith said: Hisham wrote to me, from his father, from Asma' bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: I saw Zaid bin 'Amr bin Nufail standing with his back against the Ka'bah, saying, 'O people of Quraysh, by Allah, none of you is upon the religion of Ibrahim except me.' He used to save girls who were to be buried alive, saying to a man intending to kill his daughter, 'Do not kill her; I will provide for her needs.' He would take her, and when she grew up, he would say to her father, 'If you wish, I will return her to you, or if you wish, I will continue to provide for her needs.'
