حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَبُو عُمَرَ الضَّرِيرُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُمْ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ عَنْ الْأَقْرَعِ مُؤَذِّنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ بَعَثَنِي عُمَرُ إِلَى الْأُسْقُفِّ فَدَعَوْتُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ وَهَلْ تَجِدُنِي فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ كَيْفَ تَجِدُنِي قَالَ أَجِدُكَ قَرْنًا فَرَفَعَ عَلَيْهِ الدِّرَّةَ فَقَالَ قَرْنٌ مَهْ فَقَالَ قَرْنٌ حَدِيدٌ أَمِينٌ شَدِيدٌ قَالَ كَيْفَ تَجِدُ الَّذِي يَجِيءُ مِنْ بَعْدِي فَقَالَ أَجِدُهُ خَلِيفَةً صَالِحًا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ يُؤْثِرُ قَرَابَتَهُ قَالَ عُمَرُ يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ عُثْمَانَ ثَلَاثًا فَقَالَ كَيْفَ تَجِدُ الَّذِي بَعْدَهُ قَالَ أَجِدُهُ صَدَأَ حَدِيدٍ فَوَضَعَ عُمَرُ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ فَقَالَ يَا دَفْرَاهُ يَا دَفْرَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّهُ خَلِيفَةٌ صَالِحٌ وَلَكِنَّهُ يُسْتَخْلَفُ حِينَ يُسْتَخْلَفُ وَالسَّيْفُ مَسْلُولٌ وَالدَّمُ مُهْرَاقٌ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد الدَّفْرُ النَّتْنُ

"Narrated to us [Hafsh bin Umar Abu Umar the blind], he said: Narrated to us [Hammad bin Salamah] that [Sa'id bin Iyas Al Ajurairi] informed them from [Abdullah bin Syaqiq Al Uqaili] from [Al Aqra'] the muadhdhin of Umar Ibnul Khaththab, he said: '[Umar] sent me to meet a bishop (a Christian priest and leader), so I called him. Umar said to him: "Do you find me in the Book (Gospel)?" The bishop answered: "Yes." Umar said: "How do you find me?" He replied: "I find you like an fortress." Umar raised a whip to him and said: "What fortress?" He answered: "An iron fortress that is very strong (strong governance of Umar)." Umar said to him: "How do you find the one after me?" He replied: "I find him a righteous caliph but he favors his relatives." Umar said: "May Allah have mercy on Utsman" -three times-, Umar then said: "How do you find the one after him?" He said: "I find him rusty iron (meaning many wars occur until his sword rusts)." Then Umar placed his hand on his head and said: "How foul, how foul." The bishop said: "O Commander of the Faithful, indeed he is a righteous caliph but when appointed as caliph, swords are drawn and blood spilled (fitnah has flared when he was appointed caliph)." Abu Daud said: "Ad dafru means foul."'
