Narrated to us [Qutaibah], he said: narrated to us [Abu Awanah] from [Qatadah] from [Anas], he said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakar, Umar and Utsman always opened their prayer with ALHAMDULILLAAHI RABBIL 'AALAMIIN." Abu Isa said: "This hadith is hasan sahih. Scholars from the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, tabi'in and those after them act upon this hadith. They open recitation with ALHAMDULILLAAHI RABBIL 'AALAMIIN. Imam Syafi'i said: 'The meaning of this hadith is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakar, Umar and Utsman opened recitation with ALHAMDULILLAAHI RABBIL 'AALAMIIN. Meaning they started with Al Fatihah before another surah. This does not mean they did not recite BISMILLAAHIIR RAHMAANIR RAHIIM.' Imam Syafi'i views that one should open with BISMILLAAHIIRAHMAANIRRAHIIM and recite it aloud if the prayer recitation is aloud."
