حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ مُعَاوِيةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَيْسٍ هُوَ رَجُلٌ بَصْرِيٌّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَعَنْ وِتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَيْفَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ مِنْ آخِرِهِ فَقَالَتْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ قَدْ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ رُبَّمَا أَوْتَرَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ وَرُبَّمَا أَوْتَرَ مِنْ آخِرِهِ فَقُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ فِي الْأَمْرِ سَعَةً فَقُلْتُ كَيْفَ كَانَتْ قِرَاءَتُهُ أَكَانَ يُسِرُّ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ أَمْ يَجْهَرُ قَالَتْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ قَدْ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ قَدْ كَانَ رُبَّمَا أَسَرَّ وَرُبَّمَا جَهَرَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ فِي الْأَمْرِ سَعَةً قُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِي الْجَنَابَةِ أَكَانَ يَغْتَسِلُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ أَوْ يَنَامُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ قَالَتْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ قَدْ كَانَ يَفْعَلُ فَرُبَّمَا اغْتَسَلَ فَنَامَ وَرُبَّمَا تَوَضَّأَ فَنَامَ قُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ فِي الْأَمْرِ سَعَةًقَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ

Narrated to us [Qutaibah] has told us [Al Laits] from [Muawiyah bin Salih] from [Abdullah bin Abu Qais] a resident of Basrah, he said : I asked ['Aisyah] about the witr prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); "How does he pray Witr, is it at the beginning of the night or at the end?" 'Aisha answered; "He did all that, sometimes he prayed the witr prayer at the beginning of the night and sometimes he prayed the witr prayer at the end." I said : "Praise be to Allah who gives freedom in this matter, then I asked; "How is his reading? Does he read softly or aloud?" 'Aisyah answered; "He has done all that, sometimes he reads softly and sometimes aloud." I said : "Praise be to Allah who gives leeway in this matter." I asked again; "What does he do when jinabat? Did he take a bath before sleeping or did he sleep before taking a bath?” Aisha replied: “He used to do all of that, sometimes he would take a bath and then sleep and sometimes he would do ablution and then sleep.” I replied: “Praise be to Allah who gives leeway in this matter.” Abu Isa said: Through this route, this hadith is hasan gharib.
