Narrated to us [Ahmad bin Mani'], narrated to us [Isma'il bin Ibrahim] from [Ayyub] from [Ibnu Abu Mulaikah] from [Ibnu Abbas] that once, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out of the bathroom, and food was served to him. The companions asked: 'Shall we bring water for wudu?' He replied: 'I am only commanded to perform wudu when I intend to pray.' Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. This hadith was also narrated by [Amr bin Dinar] from [Sa'id bin Al Huwairits] and [Ibnu Abbas]. Ali bin Al Madini said: Yahya bin Sa'id said: 'Sufyan Ats Tsauri did not like washing hands before eating, nor did he like bread being placed under a large plate.'
