حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ وَغَيْرُهُ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ قَالَ قُطِعَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ بَعْثٌ فَاكْتُتِبْتُ فِيهِ فَلَقِيتُ عِكْرِمَةَ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَنَهَانِي عَنْ ذَلِكَ أَشَدَّ النَّهْيِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍأَنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَانُوا مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ يُكَثِّرُونَ سَوَادَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْتِي السَّهْمُ فَيُرْمَى بِهِ فَيُصِيبُ أَحَدَهُمْ فَيَقْتُلُهُ أَوْ يُضْرَبُ فَيُقْتَلُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ{ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمْ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ }الْآيَةَرَوَاهُ اللَّيْثُ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ

"'Abdullah bin Yazid Al-Muqri narrated to us, Haiwah and others narrated to us, both said: Muhammad bin 'Abdur Rahman Abu Al-Aswad narrated to us, he said: The people of Kufa were compelled to send a force to fight the people of Sham, and I was assigned to lead them. I met 'Ikrimah, the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, and informed him, but he strongly forbade me from doing so. He said: Ibn 'Abbas informed me that some Muslims were among the polytheists, increasing their numbers during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). An arrow would come and strike one of them, killing him, or he would be struck and killed. Then Allah revealed: 'Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves...' (An-Nisa: 97).
