حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَهْلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُأَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِبُرْدَةٍ مَنْسُوجَةٍ فِيهَا حَاشِيَتُهَا أَتَدْرُونَ مَا الْبُرْدَةُ قَالُوا الشَّمْلَةُ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَتْ نَسَجْتُهَا بِيَدِي فَجِئْتُ لِأَكْسُوَكَهَا فَأَخَذَهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحْتَاجًا إِلَيْهَا فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا وَإِنَّهَا إِزَارُهُ فَحَسَّنَهَا فُلَانٌ فَقَالَ اكْسُنِيهَا مَا أَحْسَنَهَا قَالَ الْقَوْمُ مَا أَحْسَنْتَ لَبِسَهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحْتَاجًا إِلَيْهَا ثُمَّ سَأَلْتَهُ وَعَلِمْتَ أَنَّهُ لَا يَرُدُّ قَالَ إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ مَا سَأَلْتُهُ لِأَلْبَسَهُ إِنَّمَا سَأَلْتُهُ لِتَكُونَ كَفَنِي قَالَ سَهْلٌ فَكَانَتْ كَفَنَهُ

Abdullah bin Maslamah narrated to us, Ibn Abu Hazim narrated to us from his father, from Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him with a woven striped cloak with its border. He Sa'd 'Do you know what a burdah is?' They Sa'd 'A shawl.' He Sa'd 'Yes.' She Sa'd 'I wove it with my hands and came to clothe you with it.' The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him took it, needing it, and came out to us wearing it as his waistcloth. Someone among us admired it and Sa'd 'Clothe me with it; how beautiful it is.' The people Sa'd 'You did not do well. The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him wore it needing it, and you asked for it knowing he does not refuse.' He Sa'd 'By Allah, I did not ask for it to wear it; I asked for it to be my shroud.' Sahl Sa'd 'And it became his shroud.'
