حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ شِنْظِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَرْسَلَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَاجَةٍ فَانْطَلَقْتُ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ وَقَدْ قَضَيْتُهَا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ قَالَ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مَا اللَّهُ بِهِ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَعَلَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَدَ عَلَيَّ أَنْ أَبْطَأْتُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مَا اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ أَشَدُّ مِنْ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ سَلَّمْتُ فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ وَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فَكَانَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ مُتَوَجِّهًا لِغَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ

Narrated to us [Abdushshamad] has narrated to me [my father] Narrated to us [Katsir Bin Syinzhir] Narrated to us ['Atho' Bin Abu Robah] from [Jabir bin Abdullah] said: The Messenger of Allah shallallahu'alaihi wasallam ordered me to do something, then I did it, and I came back after I had done it. Then I went to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him and I said hello to him but he did not answer. (Jabir bin Abdullah radliyallahu'anhuma) said: until my heart has a block that only Allah knows better. (Jabir bin Abdullah radliyallahu'anhuma) said: I said to myself 'Maybe The Messenger of Allah shallallahu'alaihi wasallam was angry with me because I was late'. I greeted him once again but heStill didn't answer. So the problem in my heart is worse and bigger than the first, and only Allah knows. Then I said it again and he answered it and said: "Indeed, nothing prevents me from answering your greeting except because I am praying", he did this in his vehicle without facing the Qibla.
