Imam Ahmad : 2217

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن أَحْمَد وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْهُ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ الصَّفَا ذَهَبًا وَأَنْ يُنَحِّيَ الْجِبَالَ عَنْهُمْ فَيَزْدَرِعُوا فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَسْتَأْنِيَ بِهِمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تُؤْتِيَهُمْ الَّذِي سَأَلُوا فَإِنْ كَفَرُوا أُهْلِكُوا كَمَا أَهْلَكْتُ مَنْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَالَ لَا بَلْ أَسْتَأْنِي بِهِمْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ { وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا أَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْأَوَّلُونَ وَآتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً }

Narrated to us [Uthman bin Muhammad], Abdullah bin Ahmad said : I have heard it from him; has told us [Jarir] from [Al A'masy] from [Ja'far bin Iyas] from [Sa'id bin Jubair] from [Ibn Abbas], he said : The people of Makkah asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to turn the hill of Safa into gold and for the mountains to be leveled for them so that they could grow crops. If they disbelieve, then they will be destroyed like the people before them who were destroyed. He said: "No, but I am suspending them." Then Allah Glory be to Him, the Most Exalted revealed the verse: "(Moses said: 'The time for (We and) you to meet is on a feast day and let the people gather when the sun partially rises.')
