حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي يَزِيدَ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الشُّهَدَاءُ أَرْبَعَةٌ رَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ جَيِّدُ الْإِيمَانِ لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَصَدَقَ اللَّهَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَرْفَعُ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ أَعْيُنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ هَكَذَا وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ حَتَّى وَقَعَتْ قَلَنْسُوَتُهُ قَالَ فَمَا أَدْرِي أَقَلَنْسُوَةَ عُمَرَ أَرَادَ أَمْ قَلَنْسُوَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ وَرَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ جَيِّدُ الْإِيمَانِ لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَكَأَنَّمَا ضُرِبَ جِلْدُهُ بِشَوْكِ طَلْحٍ مِنْ الْجُبْنِ أَتَاهُ سَهْمٌ غَرْبٌ فَقَتَلَهُ فَهُوَ فِي الدَّرَجَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ وَرَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ خَلَطَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَصَدَقَ اللَّهَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ فَذَلِكَ فِي الدَّرَجَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ وَرَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ أَسْرَفَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَصَدَقَ اللَّهَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ فَذَلِكَ فِي الدَّرَجَةِ الرَّابِعَةِقَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لَا نَعْرِفُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَطَاءِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ سَمِعْت مُحَمَّدًا يَقُولُ قَدْ رَوَى سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ وَقَالَ عَنْ أَشْيَاخٍ مِنْ خَوْلَانَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي يَزِيدَ و قَالَ عَطَاءُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ

Narrated to us [Qutaibah] said, narrated to us [Ibnu Lahi'ah] from [Atha bin Dinar] from [Abu Yazid Al Khaulani] that he heard [Fadhalah bin Ubaid] say: I heard [Umar Ibnul Khaththab] say: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Martyrs are of four types: a believer with exceptional faith who meets the enemy and is true to Allah until he is killed. This is the one whom people’s eyes will gaze upon with admiration on the Day of Resurrection." The Prophet said this while raising his head until his cap fell. He said: "I do not know whose cap it was, Umar’s or the Prophet’s." He continued: "And a believer with exceptional faith who meets the enemy, but his body (meaning himself) is as if struck by a thorn due to some cowardice, and he is hit by a stray arrow, leading to his slaughter this one is in the second rank. And a believer who mixes righteous and sinful deeds, meets the enemy, and is true to Allah until he is killed this one is in the third rank. And a believer who transgresses against himself, meets the enemy, and is true to Allah until he is killed this one is in the fourth rank." Abu Isa said: 'This hadith is hasan gharib, and we only know it from the hadith of Atha bin Dinar. He said: "I heard [Muhammad] say: '[Sa'id bin Abu Ayyub] narrated this hadith from [Atha bin Dinar]. He said from some [sheikhs] of the Khaulan region, and he did not mention in his narration 'from Abu Zayid.' But Atha bin Dinar said: 'There is no issue with that.'"'
