Imam Bukhari : 3113و حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِيِّ وَكَثِيرِ بْنِ كَثِيرِ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ أَبِي وَدَاعَةَ يَزِيدُ أَحَدُهُمَا عَلَى الْآخَرِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَوَّلَ مَا اتَّخَذَ النِّسَاءُ الْمِنْطَقَ مِنْ قِبَلِ أُمِّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ اتَّخَذَتْ مِنْطَقًا لَتُعَفِّيَ أَثَرَهَا عَلَى سَارَةَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَبِابْنِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَهِيَ تُرْضِعُهُ حَتَّى وَضَعَهُمَا عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ عِنْدَ دَوْحَةٍ فَوْقَ زَمْزَمَ فِي أَعْلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَلَيْسَ بِمَكَّةَ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَحَدٌ وَلَيْسَ بِهَا مَاءٌ فَوَضَعَهُمَا هُنَالِكَ وَوَضَعَ عِنْدَهُمَا جِرَابًا فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَسِقَاءً فِيهِ مَاءٌ ثُمَّ قَفَّى إِبْرَاهِيمُ مُنْطَلِقًا فَتَبِعَتْهُ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ فَقَالَتْ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ وَتَتْرُكُنَا بِهَذَا الْوَادِي الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِيهِ إِنْسٌ وَلَا شَيْءٌ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا وَجَعَلَ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَيْهَا "Narrated by 'Abdullah bin Muhammad, 'Abdul Razzaq told us, Ma'mar informed us, from Ayyub As-Sakhtiyani and Katsir bin Katsir bin Al Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah, one adding to the other, from Sa'id bin Jubair, who said: Ibn 'Abbas said: 'The first to wear a waistband was Ummu Isma'il, to conceal her tracks from Sarah. Then Ibrahim brought her and her son Isma'il while she was nursing him and placed them near the Ka'bah under a tree above Zamzam at the highest part of the mosque. At that time, there was no one in Makkah, nor was there water. He placed them there with a sack of dates and a water skin, then Ibrahim turned to leave. Ummu Isma'il followed him, saying: "O Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley with no people or anything?" She repeated this several times, but he did not look back. She said: "Did Allah command you to do this?" He said: "Yes." She said: "Then He will not abandon us." She returned, and Ibrahim went on until he reached the pass where they could not see him. He faced the Ka'bah, raised his hands, and prayed: "Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful" (QS. Ibrahim: 37). Ummu Isma'il nursed Isma'il and drank from the water until it ran out, and she and her son became thirsty. She saw him writhing, or he said, struggling. She left, hating to look at him, and found Safa, the nearest mountain. She stood on it, looking into the valley to see if anyone was there, but saw no one. She descended from Safa, and when she reached the valley, she lifted the hem of her garment and ran like a distressed person until she crossed the valley and reached Marwah. She stood on it, looking to see if anyone was there, but saw no one. She did this seven times. Ibn 'Abbas said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is why people run between them." When she looked from Marwah, she heard a sound and said: "Hush," meaning herself, then listened and heard it again. She said: "You have made yourself heard; if you have help, come." Then she saw an angel at the place of Zamzam, digging with his heel, or he said, his wing, until water appeared. She began to contain it, gesturing with her hands and filling her water skin, but the water kept gushing after she scooped. Ibn 'Abbas said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'May Allah have mercy on Ummu Isma'il. If she had left Zamzam, or not scooped the water, it would have been a flowing spring.' She drank and nursed her child. The angel said to her: 'Do not fear abandonment, for here is the House of Allah, which this boy and his father will build. Allah does not abandon His people.' The Ka'bah was raised above the ground like a hill, with floods passing to its right and left. She stayed there until a group from Jurhum, or a household from Jurhum, passed by from the way of Kada'. They settled in lower Makkah and saw a bird circling, saying: 'This bird must be circling over water; we know this valley has no water.' They sent one or two scouts, who found the water and returned to inform them. They came to her, and Ummu Isma'il was by the water. They said: 'Will you allow us to stay with you?' She said: 'Yes, but you have no right to the water.' They agreed. Ibn 'Abbas said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This pleased Ummu Isma'il, who loved company.' They settled and sent for their families, who joined them until there were households among them. The boy grew, learned Arabic from them, and became dear and admirable to them. When he reached maturity, they married him to one of their women. Ummu Isma'il died, and Ibrahim came after Isma'il's marriage to check on his family. He did not find Isma'il and asked his wife about him. She said: 'He went to seek provision for us.' He asked about their life and condition, and she said: 'We are in hardship and distress,' complaining to him. He said: 'When your husband returns, convey my greetings and tell him to change the threshold of his door.' When Isma'il returned, he sensed something and asked: 'Did anyone come?' She said: 'Yes, an old man came, asked about you, and I told him. He asked about our life, and I said we are in hardship.' He asked: 'Did he leave any message?' She said: 'Yes, he sent his greetings and said to change the threshold of your door.' Isma'il said: 'That was my father, and he ordered me to separate from you. Return to your family.' He divorced her and married another from them. Ibrahim stayed away as long as Allah willed, then returned but did not find Isma'il. He asked his wife, who said: 'He went to seek provision.' He asked about their life, and she said: 'We are in good and abundance,' praising Allah. He asked: 'What is your food?' She said: 'Meat.' He asked: 'What is your drink?' She said: 'Water.' He prayed: 'O Allah, bless their meat and water.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'They had no grain then, or he would have prayed for it.' He said: 'When your husband returns, convey my greetings and tell him to keep the threshold of his door.' When Isma'il returned, he asked: 'Did anyone come?' She said: 'Yes, a fine old man came, asked about you, and I told him. He asked about our life, and I said we are in good condition.' He asked: 'Did he leave any message?' She said: 'Yes, he sent his greetings and said to keep the threshold of your door.' Isma'il said: 'That was my father, and he ordered me to keep you.'
