Narrated to me [Abu Nu'aim] with about half of this hadith narrated to us ['Umar bin Dzar] narrated to us [Mujahid] that [Abu Hurairah] said "By Allah, the One besides whom there is no deity, I used to press my stomach against the ground due to hunger, and I would tie a stone to my belly due to hunger. One day, I sat on their path, the one they used to come out from. Abu Bakr passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, not asking him except so he would feed me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Umar passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, not asking him except so he would feed me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Abul Qasim, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by, smiled when he saw me, and knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, 'O Abu Hirr!' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Follow me.' He proceeded, and I followed him. He entered and asked permission for me, and I was permitted to enter. He found milk in a bowl and said, 'Where did this milk come from?' They said, 'So-and-so or so-and-so gifted it to you.' He said, 'O Abu Hirr!' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Go to the people of the Suffah and call them to me.' The people of the Suffah were the guests of Islam, with no family, wealth, or anyone to turn to. When charity came to him, he would send it to them and not take anything from it, and when a gift came to him, he would send some to them and take some, sharing it with them. This saddened me, and I said, 'What is this milk for the people of the Suffah? I am more entitled to drink from this milk to gain strength.' When they came, he ordered me to give it to them, and I thought, 'What will reach me from this milk?' But there was no escaping obedience to Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. I went to them and called them, and they came, asked permission, and were permitted, taking their seats in the house. He said, 'O Abu Hirr!' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Take it and give it to them.' I took the bowl and gave it to a man, who drank until he was satisfied, then returned the bowl to me. I gave it to another man, who drank until he was satisfied, then returned the bowl to me, and so on until I reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and all the people had drunk their fill. He took the bowl, placed it in his hand, looked at me, smiled, and said, 'O Abu Hirr!' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Now it is just you and me.' I said, 'You are right, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Sit and drink.' I sat and drank. He said, 'Drink,' and I drank. He kept saying, 'Drink,' until I said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I can find no more room for it.' He said, 'Give it to me.' I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah, said His name, and drank the remainder.
