Narrated to us [Muhammad bin ‘Amru As-Sawwaq Al-Balkhi] he said: narrated to us [Hushaym] from [Yazid bin Abu Ziyad]: and [Mahmud bin Ghaylan] said: narrated to us [Husayn Al-Ju‘fi] from [Za‘idah] from [Yazid bin Abu Ziyad] from [‘Abdurrahman bin Abu Layla] from [‘Ali] he said: "I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about madhi: he replied: ‘Madhi requires wudu: semen requires bathing.’" In this chapter there are narrations from Al-Miqdad bin Al-Aswad and Ubayy bin Ka‘b. Abu Isa said: "This hadith is hasan sahih. It is also narrated through other chains from ‘Ali bin Abu Thalib from the Prophet: ‘Madhi requires wudu: semen requires bathing.’ This is the view of most scholars among the Companions, Tabi‘in and later generations. Sufyan, Syafi‘i, Ahmad and Ishaq also hold it."
