The narrator said: It was narrated to me by Al-Laithi, from Malik ibn Anas, from Ibn Shihab. 'Umar ibn 'Abdul-'Aziz once delayed the prayer. 'Urwah ibn Az-Zubair came to him and informed him that Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah had delayed the prayer one day while he was in Kufa. Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari then came to him and said: "What is this, O Mughirah? Have you not known that Jibril (Gabriel) descended and prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed? Then he prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed. Then he prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed. Then he prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed. Then he said: 'This is what I was commanded.' 'Umar ibn 'Abdul-'Aziz said: 'Consider carefully what you narrate, O 'Urwah! Was it indeed Jibril who established the prayer times for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?' 'Urwah said: 'This is how Bishr ibn Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari used to narrate from his father.' Then 'Urwah affirmed: 'And 'Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), indeed narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray 'Asr while the sun was still in its place before it became apparent (declined).'

It was narrated to me by Yahya, from Malik, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from 'Atha' ibn Yasar, that he said: 'A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and asked him about the time of the Subh (Fajr) prayer.' ('Atha' ibn Yasar) said: 'So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent about it until the next morning, when he prayed Subh when dawn broke. The next morning, he prayed Subh after it had become light. Then (the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)) said: "Where is the one who asked about the prayer time?" The man replied: "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah." So he said: "The time for Subh prayer is between these two times.
