Abu Khaithamah Zuhayr bin Harb narrated to me, who said that Waki' narrated to us, from Kahmas, from 'Abdullah bin Buraydah, from Yahya bin Ya'mar. (In another narration) 'Ubaydullah bin Mu'adh al-'Anbari narrated to us, and this is his hadith, who said that my father narrated to us, who said that Kahmas narrated to us, from Ibn Buraydah, from Yahya bin Ya'mar, who said, ""The first person to discuss predestination in Basra was Ma'bad al-Juhani, so Humaid bin Abdurrahman al-Himyari and I went for Hajj or Umrah. We said, 'If only we could meet one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we would ask him about what they are saying regarding predestination.' Abdullah bin 'Umar was destined (by Allah) for us, and he was entering the mosque. So my friend and I intercepted him. One of us was on his right side and the other on his left. I thought my friend would let me speak, so I said, 'O Abu Abdurrahman, there has appeared among us a people who recite the Qur'an and seek knowledge, yet they claim there is no predestination, and that the matter is new (not preceded by Allah's predestination and knowledge).' Abdullah bin 'Umar replied, 'If you meet those people, then tell them that I am free of them, and that they are free of me. And by the One by Whom the servant of Allah takes an oath, if one of you were to spend gold the size of Mount Uhud, his charity would not be accepted until he believes in predestination, both its good and its evil.' He said, 'Then he began to narrate the hadith and said, ''Umar bin al-Khattab said, 'We were once with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when a man came whose clothes were extremely white and his hair was extremely black. There were no signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him, until he sat close to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and placed his knees against the Prophet's knees. Then he said, 'O Muhammad, inform me about Islam?' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: ""To testify that there is no god (worthy of worship) except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to fast during Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House (Ka'bah) if you are able to make the journey to it."" He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' 'Umar said, 'We were surprised by him, as he would ask him a question and then confirm it.' He asked again, 'Inform me about faith?' He replied: ""To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in predestination, both its good and its evil."" He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' He asked, 'Inform me about Ihsan?' He replied: ""To worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you."" He asked again, 'When will the Last Hour be?' He replied: ""The one who is asked does not know more than the one who is asking."" He asked, 'Then inform me about its signs?' He replied: ""When a female slave gives birth to her master, and when you see the barefooted, naked, poor, and shepherds of goats competing to build tall buildings."" Then he left. I was still astonished, then he said, ""O 'Umar, do you know who that questioner was?"" I replied, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: ""That was Jibril, he came to you to teach you your religion."" Muhammad bin 'Ubayd al-Ghubari and Abu Kamil al-Jahdari and Ahmad bin 'Abdah narrated to us, who said that Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Matar al-Warraq, from 'Abdullah bin Buraydah, from Yahya bin Ya'mar, who said, 'When Ma'bad said what he said about the issue of predestination, we disapproved of it.' He said again, 'Then I performed Hajj with Humaid bin Abdurrahman al-Himyari.' Then they mentioned a hadith similar in meaning to the hadith of Kahmas. In it there are some additions and omissions of letters."" And Muhammad bin Hatim narrated to us, who said that Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, who said that 'Uthman bin Ghiyath narrated to us, who said that 'Abdullah bin Buraydah narrated to us, from Yahya bin Ya'mar and Humaid bin Abdurrahman, both of whom said, ""We met 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, and we mentioned predestination and their opinion about it, then he narrated the hadith to us just as they did from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace be upon him), and in it there are some additions and omissions."" Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah and Zuhayr bin Harb narrated to us, all from Ibn 'Ulayyah. Zuhayr said, Isma'il bin Ibrahim narrated to us, from Abu Hayyan, from Abu Zur'ah bin 'Amr bin Jarir, from Abu Hurayrah, who said, ""One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was in front of the people, when a man came to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is faith?' He replied, 'To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, to believe in the event of meeting with Him, to believe in His messengers, and to believe in the Last Resurrection.' He asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?' He replied, 'Islam is that you worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, to establish the obligatory prayer, to pay the obligatory zakat, and to fast Ramadan.' He asked again, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Ihsan?' He replied, 'You worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' He asked again, 'O Messenger of Allah, when will the Hour be?' He replied, 'The one who is asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking, but I will tell you about its signs: when a female slave gives birth to her master. That is one of its signs. And when the naked, barefooted become the leaders of men. That is one of its signs. And when the shepherds of goats compete in building tall buildings. That is one of its signs among the five signs that no one knows except Allah.' Then he (peace be upon him) recited: '(Indeed, Allah, with Him is knowledge of the Hour and He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.)' (Q.s. Luqman: 34). Then the man went back. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ""Call that man back to me."" So they began to call him, but they did not see anything. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ""This was Jibril, who came to teach the people about their religion."" Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr narrated to us, who said that Muhammad bin Bisyr narrated to us, who said that Abu Hayyan at-Taymi narrated to us with this chain a similar hadith, except that in his narration there is the phrase, 'When a female slave gives birth to her husband,' meaning the concubines.

But they were afraid and hesitant to ask him. So a man came and sat in front of his knees. The man asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?' He replied, 'You fear (khashyah) Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' Then he asked again, 'O Messenger of Allah, when will the Hour be?' Qutaybah bin Sa'id bin Jamil bin Tarif bin Abdullah ats-Tsaqafi narrated to us, from Malik bin Anas in a narration recited to him, from Abu Suhail, from his father, that he heard Talhah bin Ubaydullah say, ""A man from the people of Najd with unkempt hair came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). We heard the murmuring of his voice, but we could not understand what he was saying until he came close to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It turned out he was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: 'Islam is five prayers a day and night.' He asked again, 'Do I have any obligations other than that?' He replied: 'No, unless you perform voluntary prayers and fast Ramadan.' He asked, 'Do I have any obligations other than that?' He replied: 'No, unless you perform voluntary fasting,' and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioned (the obligation of) zakat to him. He asked again, 'Do I have any obligations other than that?' He replied: 'No, unless you give voluntary charity.' The narrator said, ""Then the man turned and left, and he said, 'By Allah, I will not add more than this and will not decrease from it.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ""He will be happy if he is truthful (in doing it)."" Yahya bin Ayyub and Qutaybah bin Sa'id narrated to us, all from Isma'il bin Ja'far, from Abu Suhail, from his father, from Talhah bin 'Ubaydullah, from the Prophet (peace be upon him) with this hadith like the hadith of Malik, except that he said, ""The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ""He will be happy, -by his father- if he is truthful,"" or ""He will enter Paradise, -by his father- if he is truthful.'""

He asked, and we listened. Then a man from the desert dwellers came and said, 'O Muhammad, your messenger came to us and claimed that you claim that Allah sent you.' The Messenger of Allah replied: 'It is true.' He asked, 'Who created the heaven?' The Messenger of Allah replied: 'Allah.' He asked, 'Who created the earth?' The Messenger of Allah replied: 'Allah.' He asked, 'Who set up these mountains and put everything He created inside them?' He replied: 'Allah.' He asked, 'So by the One who created the heaven, created the earth, and set up these mountains, did Allah really send you?' He replied: 'Yes.' He asked, 'Your messenger claims that we are obligated to perform five prayers a day and night, is this true?' He replied: 'It is true.' He asked, 'By the One who sent you, did Allah command you to do this?' He replied: 'Yes.' He asked, 'Your messenger claims that we are obligated to fast Ramadan every year, is this true?' He replied: 'Yes.' He asked, 'By the One who sent you, did Allah command you to do this?' He replied: 'Yes.' He asked, 'Your messenger claims that we are obligated to perform Hajj for those among us who are able to make the journey, is this true?' He replied, 'Yes, it is true.' Then he turned away and said, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not add to these obligations and I will not decrease from them.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ""If he is truthful (in what he said), he will surely enter Paradise."" Abdullah bin Hashim al-Abdi narrated to us, who said that Bahz narrated to us, who said that Sulayman bin al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Tsabit, who said, Anas said, ""We were hesitant to ask about anything from the Qur'an to the Messenger of Allah.""
