Imam Ahmad : 5245حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ خَلَقْتَ نَفْسِي وَأَنْتَ تَوَفَّاهَا لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحْيَاهَا إِنْ أَحْيَيْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا وَإِنْ أَمَتَّهَا فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا اللَّهُمَّ أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ مِنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Narrated to us [Muhammad bin Ja'far] Narrated to us [Syu'bah] from [Khalid] Narrated to us [Abdullah bin Harith] from [Abdullah bin Umar], that he once told a man who wanted to lie down to sleep to say the prayer: "ALLAHUMMA INNAKA KHALAQTA NAFSI WA ANTA TAWAFFAAHAA LAKA MAMATUHA WA MAHYAAHAA IN AHYAITAHA FAHFAZH-HA WAIN AMATTAHAA FAGHFIRLAHA ALLAHUMMA ASALUKAL AFIYAH (O Allah, indeed You are the One Who created my soul and You are also the one who killed it, its death and life are Your authority so if You give it life then protect it and if You kill it then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for salvation)." Then the man asked: Did you hear this from Umar? Then he answered: from someone good, from Umar may Allah be pleased with him, from Rasulullah sallallaahu'alaihi wasallam
