Narrated to us [Yahya bin Yahya] and [Abu Bakar bin Abu Syaibah], both from [Abu Mu'awiyah]. In another chain, narrated to us [Ishaq bin Ibrahim], informed us [Jarir] and [Isa bin Yunus], all from [Al A'masy]. In another chain, narrated to us [Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numair], with his wording, narrated to us [Asbath] and [Abu Mu'awiyah], who said, narrated to us [Al A'masy] from [Abdullah bin Murrah] from [Masruq], who said, 'We asked [Abdullah] about this verse: "Do not think those killed in Allah’s way are dead they are alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance" (Qur’an, Ali Imran: 169). He said, "We asked about it, and he replied, 'Their souls are in green birds with lanterns hanging at the Throne, entering and leaving Paradise as they wish, then resting in those lanterns. Their Lord looked at them and said, "Do you desire anything?" They replied, "What more could we desire when we enter Paradise at will?" Allah asked thrice. Seeing they would not be left until answering, they said, "O Lord, we wish our souls returned to our bodies to fight in Your way again." Seeing they needed nothing more, they were left alone.'
