Narrated to us [Harun bin Ishaq Al Hamdani], narrated to us ['Abdah bin Sulaiman] from [Hisham bin 'Urwah] from [his father] from [Najiyah Al Khuza'i], the caretaker of the camels of the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him, he said: 'I asked: O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with a camel that is about to die? He replied: Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, and keep it away from people's sight, so they may eat from it.' Abu Isa At Tirmidzi said: 'A similar hadith is narrated from Dhuaib Abu Qabishah Al Khuza'i.' Abu 'Isa said: 'The hadith of Najiyah is hasan sahih and is practiced by the scholars. They hold that in the case of a camel about to die, the owner and those with him should not eat from it, but give it to others to eat, and he does not have to compensate for it. This is the opinion of Syafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. They said: If he eats from the animal, he must give charity equal to the meat he ate. Some scholars hold: If he eats from it, he must compensate for it.'"
