Narrated to us [Abu Mu'awiyah], saying Narrated to us [Al-A'masy] from [Minhal bin 'Umar] from [Zadzan] from [Al Bara' bin 'Azib] saying: We set out with the Prophet Peace be upon him accompanying the funeral of an Anshari. We reached the graveyard. When the grave was being dug, the Messenger of Allah Peace be upon him sat and we sat around him, as if birds were upon our heads, while in his hand was a twig with which he was striking the ground. He raised his head toward the sky and said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave (he said it two or three times)." Then he said: "When a believing servant is about to depart from this world and meet the Hereafter, angels from heaven descend to him with white faces as if their faces were the sun. They bring a shroud from the shrouds of Paradise and fragrance from the fragrance of Paradise until they sit beside him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death, Peace be upon him, comes and sits at his head and says: 'O tranquil soul, come out to the forgiveness of Allah and His pleasure.' The Prophet said: then it flows out as a drop of water flows from the mouth of a jug and the angel takes it. When the angel takes it, he does not leave it in his hand for even the blink of an eye until he puts it into that shroud and that fragrance. Then the deceased passes away like the most fragrant scent of musk found on the face of the earth. The Prophet said: the angels then carry the soul upward, and they do not pass by any group of angels except they ask: 'Who is this pure soul?' The angels answer: 'This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' and they call him by his best names which people used to call him in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven and ask for it to be opened, and it is opened. The angels near to Allah (muqarrabun) accompany him to the next heaven until it reaches the seventh heaven, then Allah May Allah be pleased with him says: 'Write the record of My servant in 'Iliyyin and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, into it I return them, and from it I shall bring them forth once again.' The Prophet said: then his soul is returned to his body, then two angels come to him and make him sit and ask: 'Who is your Lord?' He answers: 'My Lord is Allah.' Both ask: 'What is your religion?' He answers: 'My religion is Islam.' Both ask: 'What do you say about this man who was sent to you?' The deceased answers: 'He is the Messenger of Allah Peace be upon him.' Both ask: 'How do you know?' He answers: 'I read the Book of Allah and I believed in it and testified to its truth.' Then a Caller in the heaven calls out: 'My servant has spoken the truth, spread for him the carpets of Paradise and clothe him in the garments of Paradise, and open for him a door toward Paradise.' The Prophet said: so the servant receives its fragrance and scent, and his grave is widened for him as far as the eye can see. Then a man with a handsome face, beautiful clothes, and a pleasant fragrance comes to him and says: 'Rejoice with the news that gladdens you. This is the day promised to you.' The deceased asks: 'Who are you, for your face brings goodness?' The handsome man answers: 'I am your righteous deeds.' Then the servant asks: 'O my Lord, let the Hour (Resurrection) be established now so that I may return to my family and my wealth.' Conversely, when a disbelieving servant is about to depart from this world and meet the Hereafter, he is met by angels from heaven with grim faces carrying a pitch-black shroud made of hair, and they sit beside him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and shouts: 'O foul soul, come out to the wrath of Allah and His anger.' The Prophet said: then his soul is scattered throughout his body, and the angel pulls it out like a multi-pronged hook being pulled through wet wool, tearing it. When the angel has pulled it out, he does not leave it for even the blink of an eye until he wraps it in that pitch-black shroud of hair and the soul departs with the foulest stench on earth. The angels then carry it up, and they do not bring it to any group of angels in the heaven except they ask: 'Who is this foul soul?' The angels carrying it answer: 'This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' and they call him by the worst names people used to call him in the world until it reaches the lowest heaven and they ask for it to be opened. But the heaven is not opened. Then the Messenger of Allah Peace be upon him recited the verse: 'For them the gates of heaven will not be opened, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel enters the eye of a needle' (QS. Al-A'raf: 40). Then Allah May Allah be pleased with him says: 'Write his record in Sijjin in the lowest earth.' Then his soul is cast down far away, then he (the Prophet) recited the verse: 'And whoever associates partners with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by birds or the wind blew him to a remote place' (QS. Al-Hajj: 31). Then his soul is returned to his body. The two angels then come to him and make him sit and interrogate: 'Who is your Lord?' He answers: 'I... I don't know.' Both angels ask: 'What is your religion?' He answers: 'I... I don't know.' Both ask: 'What do you say about this man who was sent to you?' He answers: 'I... I don't know.' Then a Caller from heaven calls out: 'He has truly lied! Spread for him the fire of Hell!' Then the angel opens a door of Hell for him and its heat and flames reach him. His grave tightens upon him until his ribs are crushed. Then a man with a terrifying face, shabby clothes, and a foul smell comes to him and says: 'Rejoice with all that distresses you. This is your day which was promised to you.' The deceased asks: 'Who are you with your terrifying face that brings evil?' The man answers: 'I am your evil deeds,' and the deceased prays: 'O Lord, do not establish the Hour!'" (Narrated also via [Ibnu Numair] and [Mu'awiyah bin 'Amru] with similar meaning).
