حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعُودُنِي عَامَ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ مِنْ وَجَعٍ اشْتَدَّ بِي فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدْ بَلَغَ بِي مِنْ الْوَجَعِ وَأَنَا ذُو مَالٍ وَلَا يَرِثُنِي إِلَّا ابْنَةٌ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي قَالَ لَا فَقُلْتُ بِالشَّطْرِ فَقَالَ لَا ثُمَّ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَبِيرٌ أَوْ كَثِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَذَرَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَذَرَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ وَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا أُجِرْتَ بِهَا حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلُ فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُخَلَّفُ بَعْدَ أَصْحَابِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا إِلَّا ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ دَرَجَةً وَرِفْعَةً ثُمَّ لَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لِأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلَا تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنْ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ بْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ

Narrated by Abdullah bin Yusuf, informed us Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Amir bin Sa?ad bin Abu Waqqas, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me during the Farewell Pilgrimage when I was very ill. I said: 'My illness has worsened, and I have wealth, but only a daughter will inherit me. May I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Half?' He said: 'No.' Then he said: 'A third, and a third is substantial or a lot. It is better to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging people. You will not spend anything seeking Allah?s pleasure but you will be rewarded for it, even for what you put in your wife?s mouth.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will I outlive my companions?' He said: 'You will not outlive them and do a righteous deed but it will increase your rank and status. Perhaps you will live long enough for some to benefit from you and others to be harmed. O Allah, complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels.' But Sa?ad bin Khawlah saddened the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because he died in Makkah.
