Narrated to us [Zaid, he is the son of Akhzam] said, narrated to us [Abu Qutaibah, Salmu bin Qutaibah] narrated to me [Mutsanna bin Sa'id Al Qashir] said, narrated to me [Abu Jamrah] said, [Ibnu 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them] said to us: "Would you like me to tell you about the conversion of Abu Dzarr, may Allah be pleased with him?" Abu Jamrah said: We replied, "Yes, we would." Ibnu 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: Abu Dzarr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: "I was a man from the tribe of Ghifar, and news reached us that a man in Makkah claimed to be a Prophet, so I said to my brother: 'Go to this man, speak with him, and bring me news about him.' So he went, met him, and returned. I asked, 'What news do you bring?' He said, 'By Allah, I have seen a man who calls to goodness and forbids evil.' I said to him, 'I am not satisfied with the news you bring.' So I took a leather bag and a stick and set out for Makkah. When I arrived, I did not know the man and was reluctant to ask about him. I drank from the water of Zamzam and stayed in the mosque (al-Haram)." Abu Dzarr continued: "Then 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me and said, 'It seems you are a stranger?' I said, 'Yes, that's right.' He said, 'Come to the house.' So I went with him, and he did not ask me anything, nor did I tell him my purpose." In the morning, I returned to the mosque to ask about the man, but no one could give me any information. Abu Dzarr continued: "Then 'Ali approached me and said, 'Has this man not yet found his home?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Come with me.' Then he asked, 'What is your business, and what brought you to this land?' I said to him, 'If you keep it a secret, I will tell you.' He said, 'I will do so.' I said to him, 'We heard that a man has appeared here claiming to be a Prophet, so I sent my brother to speak with him, but he returned, and I was not satisfied with the news he brought. So I wanted to meet him.' 'Ali said to him, 'You have been guided, and I will show you the way to him. Follow me, and enter where I enter. If I see someone I fear for you, I will stand by the wall as if fixing my sandal, and you should proceed.' So he went, and I went with him until he entered, and I entered with him to meet the Prophet (peace be upon him). I said to him, 'Explain Islam to me.' So he explained it, and I embraced Islam on the spot. Then he said to me, 'O Abu Dzarr, keep this matter a secret and return to your land. When you hear of our success, come back.' I said, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I will proclaim it among them.' So I went to the mosque while the Quraysh were there and said, 'O people of Quraysh, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.' They said, 'Get up against this one who has changed his religion.' So they stood up and beat me until I nearly died. Then 'Abbas found me, covered me, and turned to them, saying, 'Woe to you, you would kill a man from Ghifar when your trade and passage (to Sham) go through Ghifar?' So they let me go. The next morning, I returned to the mosque and said the same as I did yesterday. They again said, 'Get up against this one who has changed his religion.' I was treated as they did yesterday, and again 'Abbas found me, covered me, and said to the Quraysh the same as he said yesterday." Ibnu 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: "That was the beginning of Abu Dzarr's Islam, may Allah have mercy on him.
