Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah and Muhammad bin al-Muthanna and Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated to us, and their wordings are similar. Abu Bakr said, Ghundar narrated to us, from Shu'bah, while the other two said, Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated to us, who said that Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu Jamrah, who said, ""I was a translator between Ibn 'Abbas and the people, then a woman came and asked about the juice of nabidh (a type of wine) stored in a pottery vessel. They replied, 'Rabi'ah.' He said: ""Welcome to the people - or the delegation - without any reluctance or regret."" So, command us with a decisive matter that we can inform our people about, so that with it we can enter Paradise.' The narrator said, 'So the Messenger of Allah commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things.' The narrator said again, 'The Messenger of Allah commanded them to believe in Allah alone and said, 'Do you know what it means to believe in Allah?' They replied, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: ""To testify that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to pay one-fifth of the war booty, and I forbid you from ad-Dubba', al-Hantam, and al-Muzaffat."" Abu Bakr said, Waki' narrated to us from Zakariya bin Ishaq, who said that Yahya bin Abdullah bin Shaifi narrated to me from Abu Ma'bad from Ibn Abbas from Mu'adh bin Jabal. Abu Bakar said, 'Perhaps...' Waki' said, from Ibn Abbas, that Mu'adh said, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent me.' He said, 'Indeed, you will come to a people from the People of the Book, so invite them to the testimony that there is no god (worthy of worship) but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has obligated upon them five prayers every day and night. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has obligated upon them a charity that is taken from their rich and distributed to their poor. If they obey you in that, then avoid their valuable wealth. Fear the prayer of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between him and Allah.' Qutaibah bin Sa'id narrated to us, who said that Laits bin Sa'ad narrated to us from Uqail from az-Zuhri, who said that Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah bin Mas'ud informed us from Abu Hurairah, he said, 'When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away, and Abu Bakar was appointed as the caliph after him, and the disbelievers from the Arabs committed disbelief, Umar bin al-Khattab said to Abu Bakar, 'How can you fight the people when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, 'There is no god (worthy of worship) but Allah,' and whoever says, 'There is no god (worthy of worship) but Allah,' then he has protected his wealth and his life from me except by the right of Islam, and his reckoning is with Allah.' So Abu Bakar said, 'By Allah, I will fight anyone who makes a distinction between prayer and zakat, because zakat is a right upon wealth. By Allah, if they withhold from me a rope that they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I will fight them because of their withholding.' Then Umar bin al-Khattab said, 'By Allah, it was not but that I saw that Allah had opened the chest of Abu Bakar to fight (them), and then I knew that it was the truth.'

He found Abu Jahal and Abdullah bin Abu Umayyah bin al-Mughirah also there. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'O uncle! Say the Two Testimonies of Faith, I will be a witness for you before Allah.' Then Abu Jahal and Abdullah bin Abu Umayyah interrupted, 'O Abu Talib, are you leaving the religion of Abdul Muththalib?' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not despair and kept teaching him to say the Two Testimonies of Faith and repeated it many times. Finally, Abu Talib's last words to them were that he remained with the religion of Abdul Muththalib, and he refused to say the Testimonies of Faith. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: 'By Allah, I will ask for forgiveness from Allah for you,' until Allah revealed the verse: '(It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the companions of the Hellfire)' (Qs. At-Tawbah: 113). Then Allah revealed His saying concerning the event of Abu Talib: '(Indeed, you (O Muhammad) do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided)' (Qs. However, the hadith of Salih ends with his saying, 'then Allah revealed His saying about it,' and he did not mention the two verses. And he mentioned in his hadith, 'And both of them returned to repeat that saying,' in the hadith of Ma'mar as a substitute for this sentence. And both of them were still based on it.

But he refused, and then Allah revealed: '(Indeed, you will not guide whom you love)' (Qs. Al Qashash: 56).

Then he said, 'The provisions of the people ran out.' Then he said, 'Until they wanted to slaughter some of their riding animals.' The narrator said, 'Then Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you were to gather some of the people's provisions and then pray to Allah over it (it would be good).' The narrator said, 'Then he did so.' The narrator said, 'Then the owner of the wheat came with his wheat, and the owner of the dates came with his dates.' The narrator said, 'And Mujahid said, 'And the owner of the seeds with their seeds.'' I said, 'What did they do with the seeds?' He replied, 'They sucked on them and drank water with them.' He said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah called them until they were able to fill their provision containers.' The narrator said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah prayed at that time: 'I bear witness that there is no god (worthy of worship) but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. No servant meets Allah holding firmly to that without any doubt, except that he will enter Paradise.'

Sahl bin Uthman and Abu Kuraib Muhammad bin al-Ala' narrated to us, all from Abu Muawiyah. Abu Kuraib said, Abu Muawiyah narrated to us from al-A'mash from Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah or - from Abu Sa'id, al-A'mash was in doubt - Abu Hurayrah said, 'During the battle of Tabuk, the army (of the Muslims) experienced great hunger, and they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you would permit us to slaughter our camels, so we can eat their meat and use their fat as oil?' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: 'Do it.' Abu Hurayrah said, 'Then Umar came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you do that, the backs of the camels (vehicles) will be gone! But it would be better for you to ask for the remaining food they have and then pray for Allah to give it blessings.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: 'Alright.' Then he asked for a spread (made of leather), and after spreading it, he asked for the remaining food that they still had.' Abu Hurayrah continued, 'Then a man came with a handful of corn, another came with a handful of dates, and some others came with food crumbs (like bread), so a little food gathered on the leather spread.' Abu Hurayrah said, 'Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed for blessings on the food, and after that, he said: 'Take it and fill your food containers.' Abu Hurayrah continued, 'They then filled their provision containers, so that not a single soldier's food container was left unfilled.' Abu Hurayrah continued, 'They then ate until they were full, and there was still food left over.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: 'I bear witness that there is no god (worthy of worship) but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. No servant meets Allah without doubting this statement and is then prevented from entering Paradise.'
